The Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) announces the February 11, 2023 Bland, George, Tolan Lecture by Dr. Biko Mandela Gray to take place at 2:00 pm. In 2021, HMAAC completed its Stairwell of Memory, highlighted by local artists Shawn Artis, Ted Ellis and Cedric Ingramportraits of Sandra Bland, George Floyd and Robbie Tolan for community memory, and to give comfort to mothers that their children will not be forgotten. The lecture will bring together Geneva Bland, Marian Tolan and Lezley McSpadden, the mothers respectively of Sandra Bland, Robbie Tolan and Michael Brown. The lecture could not be more timely.

Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin, and Houston Public Library (HPL) Director Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, honored guests and more gathered at Houston Public Library (HPL)’s African American History Research Center (AAHRC) at the Gregory School Thursday, July 27, to honor the late Barbara C. Jordan (1936-1996) and unveil Houston’s first monument dedicated to her.

Brain stimulation device enables new understanding of OCD
A team of researchers surgically implanted brain stimulators in patients with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to not only treat their disabling symptoms but also – for the first time – to simultaneously record and wirelessly stream brain signals. All five patients, whose OCD symptoms were severe and resistant to conventional therapy, have enjoyed significant improvement. In addition, the novel recordings have helped explain the relationship between brain activity and OCD symptoms. Their findings were recently published in Nature Medicine.

Jose Altuve Named Hickok Belt® Award Winner for July 2017
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of July 2017. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The voters selected Altuve for his torrid hitting throughout the month. In July, he batted .485 with four home runs, 21 RBI and a .727 slugging percentage.
