March is Women’s History Month, and Women in Jazz Association, Inc. presents Celebrating Women in Jazz, A Springtime Dinner and Concert with vocalists Candace Bellamy, Melissa Briggs, and Pamela Hart and trumpeter Rachael Spencer. The supporting band includes Juliana Silveira-piano; Jessica Valls-bass; Lauren Gould-sax and Masumi Jones-drums. This all women show showcases Austin, Texas’ jazz talent and aptitude from musicians who are passionate about jazz performance, education and its importance to the world. Throughout history women have shaped the jazz scene with sultry and sassy singing, dynamic drumming, haunting horns, beguiling bass and poetic piano. Jazz is in them, and they perform it, teach it, advocate for it and passionately share it.

While 7 out of 10 Americans acknowledge heart disease as the number one killer of both men and women, a national survey conducted by MDVIP and Ipsos finds that people still worry more about cancer (62 percent) than they do a heart attack (55 percent). A staggering 62 percent of Americans failed the "Heart Attack IQ" quiz, proving a concerning lack of knowledge about heart disease, the risk factors and prevention.

The play is directed by former Resident Acting Company Emeritus member James Black and runs February 11 – March 13, 2022 in the Neuhaus Theatre. Developed as part of the 2019 Alley All New Festival, the play was scheduled in both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 in-person seasons but cancelled due to COVID-19. Amerikin now makes its world premiere this season.

In creating this day of awareness the United Nations has recognized sickle cell disease as, “one of the world’s foremost genetic diseases.” The Brown family of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, knows all too well the challenges of this painful and debilitating disease. Their son, Kelvin Jr., has been battling sickle cell disease since he was diagnosed as an infant.
