H-E-B Chairman Charles Butt donates $5 million for PVAMU Founders Scholarships

Charles H. Butt, Chairman of H-E-B, has donated $5 million to create scholarships for Prairie View A&M University students from public high schools in Texas. The $5 million gift will provide a permanent endowment to support students today and in the coming years. Initially generating approximately $200,000 a year for scholarships, the fund will grow significantly in coming years, making even more available to support students.

This family-friendly event celebrates the rich culture and traditions of African American families with Houston’s largest black rodeo, LIVE entertainment and delicious Southern cuisine. Proceeds will benefit the BPCCA Scholarship Fund.

Charles Butt, H-E-B Chairman, Announced Today a $1,000,000 Personal Contribution to Prairie View A&M University in Honor of University President Ruth J. Simmons

President Simmons joined Prairie View in 2017 after retiring as President of Brown University where she served as President from 2001 to 2012. She had previously served as President of Smith College from 1995 to 2001. Born in Grapeland, Texas, she grew up in Houston’s Fifth Ward where she graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School. She holds both a Master of Arts and Ph.D. degree in Romance Languages and Literatures from Harvard University. Simmons chairs the Board of Directors of the Holdsworth Center for Excellence in Education Leadership.

The judges include Chet Gardner (Host of The Daytripper on PBS), Dawn Weston (Associate Editor of Edible Austin), Simon Madera (Owner of Taco Flats and La Holly), Suzanna Choffel (local musician and former contestant on The Voice), W. Houston First Theater District Garages reopen in time for Thanksgiving Day Parade
