The Houston Fire Department (HFD) is urging residents to exercise extreme caution as a Red Flag Warning has been issued for Monday, March 4, covering all areas along and west of I-45. The warning, in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., signals an elevated wildfire threat due to dangerous weather conditions.

The National Weather Service has forecasted a high wildfire outbreak potential across Texas, driven by a powerful storm system sweeping over the central plains. While brief rainfall this morning may provide temporary relief, the combination of strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation will create hazardous conditions, making it easier for fires to ignite and spread rapidly.

Critical Fire Conditions:

• Sustained winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph
• Relative humidity dropping to 15-25%, drying fuels throughout the day
• Wind Advisory in effect for all of Southeast Texas until 6 p.m.

“These conditions pose a significant threat to life and property,” said Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz. “We urge all Houstonians to remain vigilant. By taking precautions, you not only protect your home and community but also help ensure the safety of our firefighters.”

Areas at Highest Risk:

While western Houston faces the greatest fire threat, areas extending as far east as the I-45 corridor are still at risk. Communities further west should prepare for even more extreme fire conditions.

HFD’s Fire Prevention Recommendations:

✅ Avoid all outdoor fire-related activities (grilling, burning leaves, bonfires, etc.)
✅ Refrain from discarding cigarettes improperly—always use an ashtray
✅ Keep vehicles off dry grass, as hot engines can spark fires
✅ Remove dry debris (pine needles, leaves) from roofs, gutters, and eaves
✅ Ensure trailer chains do not drag on the ground, which can create sparks

🚨 IMPORTANT: Conducting outdoor burning without a permit from the fire marshal is strictly prohibited under Houston city ordinance.
