In a momentous recognition of artistic excellence and literary impact, University of Houston English professor Kevin Prufer has been named the Texas State Poet Laureate for 2026. This prestigious honor, bestowed by the Texas State Legislature, places Prufer among the elite ranks of Texas artists who have shaped the state’s rich cultural narrative through the power of words.
“I am delighted and surprised to be appointed the Texas Poet Laureate,” Prufer shared. “Nobody writes poetry for recognition, but it’s meaningful to know that the countless hours spent writing—often in solitude—have resonated with others. I’m proud to contribute to Texas’ vibrant literary tradition.”
A Nationally Celebrated Voice in Poetry
Kevin Prufer is no stranger to accolades. A prolific author, he has penned multiple award-winning poetry collections and is the 2024 Rilke Prize recipient, a Pulitzer Prize long-list finalist, and has been honored with multiple Pushcart Prizes and Best American Poetry selections. His poetry has been featured in influential publications like The New Republic, Poetry, The Paris Review, and beyond—captivating both national and international audiences.
His latest recognition cements his influence not only as a writer but also as a mentor, as he leads the Creative Writing Program in the University of Houston’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Known for inspiring students at all levels, Prufer has helped shape the voices of the next generation of poets and writers.
A Win for the University and the City of Houston
“Kevin Prufer’s creative influence extends far beyond our classrooms,” said Diane Z. Chase, UH provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “His appointment is a resounding endorsement of the caliber of talent at the University of Houston. We are incredibly proud of his achievement and the inspiration he provides both on campus and statewide.”
Dan O’Connor, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, echoed those sentiments: “His work enriches the cultural landscape of Texas and speaks to the heart of our academic mission. His role as Texas Poet Laureate honors his literary voice and his dedication to education.”
Honoring Texas’ Artistic Legacy
The title of Texas State Poet Laureate is part of the Texas State Artist program, established in 1933 by the 43rd Texas Legislature to celebrate the arts through distinguished appointments in music, visual arts, and literature. Every two years, the Texas Commission on the Arts solicits nominations and presents a list of finalists to a legislative committee for selection.
As he steps into this role, Prufer remains steadfast in his commitment to teaching and mentoring. “The University of Houston has the best creative writing program in the country,” he said. “Watching my students—both undergraduate and graduate—grow into their own voices is deeply rewarding. Poetry may start with a single person in a quiet room, but its impact can echo far beyond.”
