Texas Southern University Students Bridge Cultures at Black and Jewish Unity Dinner

In a heartwarming display of unity and dialogue, Texas Southern University (TSU) students joined peers from Rice University and the University of Houston for the inaugural UNCF "Unity Dinner," a transformative evening designed to strengthen the historic bonds between Black and Jewish communities. Held in Houston, nearly 80 students gathered to engage in meaningful conversations, fostering cross-cultural understanding and promoting inclusivity.

Supported by Hillel International and Robert Kraft’s Foundation to Combat Antisemitism, this dinner series honors the powerful alliance between Black and Jewish Americans—a relationship that was instrumental during the Civil Rights Movement and remains vital today.

Reviving Historic Ties Through Dialogue

“It was an honor to help bring Robert Kraft’s Unity Dinner to Houston and have TSU play a leading role in this impactful event,” shared Brandon L. Simmons, Chairman of the TSU Board of Regents. “TSU has long-standing ties with Houston’s Jewish community, and this dinner reignites the spirit of collaboration that has defined our history. It’s a testament to our commitment to unity and understanding.”

Simmons emphasized the importance of continuing this legacy, highlighting the contributions of Jewish Texans like the Zeidmans and Prolers, who have historically supported TSU. “This event is just the beginning. We envision more opportunities for meaningful engagement between our communities,” he added.

Building Bridges Across Generations

John Eaves, Program Director of UNCF’s Tikkun Olam Society, praised TSU’s leadership for their active role in hosting the dinner. “TSU President Lesia L. Crumpton-Young and Chairman Simmons were pivotal in bringing this initiative to life, alongside partners at Rice University and the University of Houston. This collaboration is a model for fostering unity and mutual respect.”

For students, the evening was more than just a meal—it was a chance to reflect on the power of community and the responsibility of continuing the work of past generations. “I enjoyed sharing a meal and making new friends,” said Kohl Crawford, a TSU junior and student leader. “This dinner was a reminder that it’s our turn to carry forward the legacy of collaboration between Black and Jewish Houstonians.”

A Community-Wide Commitment to Unity

The event also garnered support from key community leaders and diplomatic representatives. Israel’s Consul General to the Southwest, Livia Link-Raviv, attended and underscored the importance of fostering dialogue. In a social media post, the Israeli Consulate in Houston stated, “We are proud to support events that bring communities together. The shared history and values between the Black and Jewish communities continue to inspire and strengthen us all.”

R.W. Bray, representing U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’s office, echoed this sentiment, noting, “We love seeing our great Texas universities taking common-sense steps to combat Antisemitism. It’s crucial that all communities unite in support of the Jewish community, especially during challenging times.”

As the evening concluded, students left with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the importance of cultural dialogue. Texas Southern University remains committed to fostering inclusive spaces that encourage mutual respect and community engagement.

This Unity Dinner is more than a one-time event—it’s a step toward rebuilding and strengthening the ties between Black and Jewish communities, ensuring that future generations continue the legacy of unity, resilience, and collaboration.
