Song of the Summer? Zydeco Has Entered the Chat!

While Summer is in cool-down mode, wrapping up September 22nd, conversations around the "Song of the Summer" are just starting to heat up. This year, many commentators have observed that there is no single, universally agreed-upon "song of the summer," a phenomenon that some have attributed to the rise of curated algorithms and personalized social media feeds. Many are turning to popularity on TikTok, and that has Zydeco entering the chat by way of viral Zydeco & Soul Singer S. DOTT.

Before Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter sent the world into a frenzy for all things Country, S. Dott was already living that life. An artist from the heart of Louisiana, he's seen the style evolve from something people "clowned" him for to a global phenomenon. "Shout out to Beyoncé, she got the whole world on board right now, and it's an amazing thing to see," he says with his Louisiana accent coming through. "Sometimes it takes a little extra light to shine on something for it to glow. Cowboy Summer is a whole movement."

But S. Dott isn't just about the aesthetics. He’s the architect of what he calls "new wave Zydeco," a genre he's reshaping for a new generation. When he's on stage, he's often introducing his audience to Zydeco for the very first time. His music isn’t traditional; it's a blend of rapping, singing, and a mix of instruments to create a sound that he produces himself. "I don't know any Zydeco artists who rap on their songs," he says, highlighting his unique approach. This blend has clearly resonated, with his track "Cowgirl Trailride" generating over 70,000 videos on TikTok alone.

A Movement, Not a Moment

S. Dott's journey to this point hasn't been without its doubters. His first single, "Slow Wine," was a hit, but it was met with the familiar refrain of "it's beginner's luck, he's a one-hit wonder." He admits the doubts creep in. "It makes you think, 'will I get back there?'" But his latest single, "Cowgirl Trailride," has silenced the critics, surpassing "Slow Wine" in popularity. "Check your numbers, baby," he said to me with a playful confidence.

This success is built on more than just good beats—it’s built on authenticity. "All my music is real," S. Dott says. "I stay true to the Boot! This is my culture, and I have kids; at some point, they are going to look at everything I've done and everything I'm doing, and they will discuss this legacy. That’s another reason why I stay true to my roots."

His connection to his fans is just as real. A self-described "people person," he understands the importance of building a genuine relationship with his supporters. "I make you feel at home at my shows," he says, a promise he delivers on with every performance.

The Independent Grind

Currently an independent artist, S. Dott and his manager, Pamela, are a two-person team steering the ship. He has a simple, yet powerful, philosophy for other aspiring independent artists: "Have your vision, write down your goals, and pray." For him, this isn't just advice; it's a practice. He’s a firm believer in the power of manifestation and prayer, noting that he manifested the success of "Slow Wine" and remains "heavy in prayer" as he continues his journey.

When it comes to collaborations, S. Dott takes a pragmatic approach. While many artists have a dream list of collaborators, he's focused on working with those who are willing to work with him. "Sometimes you have to work with those who are willing to work with you," he states. When he does collaborate, his process is hands-on; he writes for both himself and his featured artists, ensuring the final product is a perfect fit.

S. Dott's story is a testament to the belief that "good music is going to always win" and that there's "no time limit on success." As he continues his Cowboy Summer tour, he's focused on what’s next: visuals. He’s currently curating a video for "Cowgirl Trailride," bringing his unique sound to life for his ever-growing audience.
