Petty Officer 1st Class Nia Henderson, a proud native of Missouri City, Texas, is charting an inspiring course of service aboard the USS John Basilone (DDG 122), one of the Navy’s newest and most advanced guided-missile destroyers stationed out of Mayport, Florida.
A graduate of Thurgood Marshall High School (Class of 2017), Henderson is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration at American Military University—balancing her academic goals with the demands of naval service.
From Missouri City to the High Seas
Henderson credits her Texas upbringing for shaping the determination and values that fuel her success.
“Growing up, I learned that if you work hard, you play harder,” Henderson said. “That mindset has led me to many achievements in the Navy, including advancing in rank quickly.”
Following in her father’s footsteps, Henderson joined the Navy six years ago, choosing the service as both a calling and a foundation for her future. Today, she serves as a personnel specialist, ensuring her fellow sailors are supported in one of the Navy’s most vital administrative roles.
Life Aboard the USS John Basilone
The USS John Basilone, named after Medal of Honor recipient Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone, is a multi-mission destroyer capable of launching Tomahawk missiles, deploying torpedoes, and operating advanced defense systems. The ship is home to more than 300 sailors, each entrusted with responsibilities ranging from engineering and navigation to weapons operations and logistics.
For Henderson, her proudest achievement is in the daily mission of serving others.
“My proudest accomplishment is assisting sailors with their records and pay,” Henderson explained. “I make sure they’re taken care of so they can focus on the mission.”
A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice
This year, the U.S. Navy marks its 250th anniversary, celebrating a quarter-millennium of safeguarding America’s seas, ensuring global commerce, and defending freedom. Navy leaders emphasize the essential role sailors like Henderson play in securing both the nation’s prosperity and its future.
With 90% of global trade traveling by sea and the world’s internet traffic dependent on undersea cables, the Navy’s ability to project power and maintain security is directly tied to the dedication of sailors from across the United States.
For Henderson, the Navy represents both sacrifice and opportunity.
“Serving in the Navy means sacrificing for something larger than myself,” she shared. “It has given me skills that apply to every part of life—professionalism, discipline, and adaptability.”
Anchored in Gratitude
Henderson acknowledges that her journey has been possible thanks to the love and support of her family back in Missouri City.
“I’d like to thank my family for their continued support,” she said.
As she continues her career aboard the USS John Basilone, Henderson stands as a shining example of Texas pride, Navy strength, and personal resilience—carrying both her hometown and her nation forward across the seas.
