This spring, The Ensemble Theatre invites audiences to feast on more than just a slice of drama — they’re serving up Melda Beaty’s sizzling and soulful play, "Coconut Cake," as part of an exciting rolling world premiere! Opening Friday, May 9, 2025, and running through Sunday, June 1, 2025, this rich and poignant production is set to stir emotions and ignite conversations across Houston.
Under the masterful direction of Eileen J. Morris, The Ensemble Theatre’s Artistic Director, "Coconut Cake" offers a stirring exploration of brotherhood, vulnerability, and the unspoken struggles of men as they age. Set inside the cozy confines of a local fast-food restaurant, a group of older men gather daily to sip coffee, share wisdom, challenge each other over chess, and confront life’s complex realities. Beaty’s sharp and witty storytelling transforms everyday banter into a profound meditation on loyalty, love, and life’s inevitable changes.

Broadway World praises Beaty’s work, calling it “a sophisticated parable with an ensemble of complex characters," where "each character becomes both a protagonist and antagonist, each with a distinct dramatic arc.” With humor, heart, and just the right touch of spice, “Coconut Cake” promises an unforgettable theatrical experience.
The Houston cast brings star power to the stage:
Jason E. Carmichael (Camp Logan)
Alex Morris (The Family Business TV show)
Troy Hogan (Queen Sugar TV show)
Kevin Daughtery (Blackbird - Dirt Dogs Theatre)
James West (Company OnStage)
Houston marks the latest stop in "Coconut Cake’s" national journey. Following acclaimed performances at the North Carolina Black Repertory Theatre, West Coast Black Theatre Troupe, Hattiloo Theatre, and St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre, Houston audiences now have their chance to savor this production’s powerful blend of laughter and life lessons.
🎭 Media Night will be hosted on Friday, May 9, 2025 — members of the press are invited to join and experience the magic firsthand. Please contact The Ensemble Theatre’s Marketing Department for media credentials and RSVP information.
