Honoring History & Heroism: The 50th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon at the Lone Star Flight Museum

This Saturday, history and heroism will take center stage at the Lone Star Flight Museum as Houstonians gather to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon with a moving firsthand account from Nick Tran, a decorated U.S. military veteran and proud Vietnamese-American.

Tran’s incredible journey began in the chaos of war-torn Saigon on April 30, 1975, when he and his family made a daring escape during the final days of the Vietnam War. As a toddler, Tran endured a harrowing three-day journey at sea with his family, followed by the hardships of life in a refugee camp—an experience that shaped his enduring commitment to service, gratitude, and country.

Fueling that commitment, Tran later enlisted in the U.S. Army as a teenager, determined to honor the sacrifices made by Vietnam War veterans and to give back to the nation that welcomed his family with hope and opportunity. Over the years, Tran served with distinction in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Following his military service, Tran graduated from Harvard Business School and went on to a successful 12-year career in the energy sector. At Schlumberger LTD, he led the #1 veteran employment program in the U.S., continuing his life’s mission to serve others—this time by empowering fellow veterans to thrive in civilian careers.

Now, Tran brings his remarkable story full circle. On Saturday, April 26, at 11:30 a.m., attendees will have the rare opportunity to hear Tran recount his family’s escape, the emotional weight of war and survival, and how resilience and service have shaped his American journey.
