Houston’s Own Eric Holy Stands Ready: USS Iwo Jima’s Close Quarters Combat Training Highlights American Excellence at Sea

Proudly representing Houston on the high seas, Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Eric Holy is proving that hometown strength and dedication extend far beyond the Texas skyline. Currently assigned to the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), Holy is sharpening his tactical edge by participating in advanced Close Quarters Combat (CQC) training—an essential part of life aboard one of the U.S. Navy's most versatile and mission-critical vessels.

This specialized training is taking place during the Amphibious Squadron Marine Expeditionary Unit Integration Training (PMINT) exercise, a pivotal phase in preparing the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to deploy as a unified, battle-ready team. Designed to simulate real-world maritime challenges, PMINT ensures sailors like Holy and their Marine counterparts are seamlessly integrated and mission-ready.

The Iwo Jima ARG’s strength lies not only in its impressive hardware—which includes the flagship USS Iwo Jima alongside San Antonio-class landing dock ships USS San Antonio (LPD 17) and USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28)—but also in the relentless commitment of its crew. Together with the 22nd MEU, this powerful joint force stands as a cornerstone of U.S. strategic deterrence, global security, and humanitarian response.

For Holy, a proud son of Houston, the experience is as much about personal growth as it is about national service. CQC training equips sailors with the critical skills necessary for confined, high-stakes scenarios, reinforcing teamwork, situational awareness, and precision under pressure. These are the same skills that ensure the Navy-Marine Corps team can project power abroad and respond effectively to global contingencies, from combat operations to disaster relief.

As the world stage evolves, America’s maritime readiness remains vital, and hometown heroes like Eric Holy exemplify the spirit and strength that keep the fleet strong. Whether patrolling international waters or lending aid in times of crisis, the Iwo Jima ARG and its sailors are always prepared to answer the nation’s call.

From Houston to the high seas, we salute Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Eric Holy and the entire crew of the USS Iwo Jima for their unwavering dedication to duty.
