In a year marking the U.S. Navy’s monumental 250th anniversary, one Houston native is exemplifying the city’s legacy of resilience, discipline, and service on a national stage. Petty Officer 2nd Class David Chapman, a proud graduate of Alief Taylor High School, is currently making waves in his career while serving at the Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility, Virginia Capes (FACSFAC VACAPES).

Chapman, who joined the Navy six years ago, serves as an air traffic controller, a role that places him at the epicenter of some of the U.S. military’s most vital operations along the East Coast. FACSFAC VACAPES—dubbed the "Giant Killers"—is tasked with managing over 112,000 square miles of offshore air, sea, and sub-surface space from Rhode Island to South Carolina. This includes supporting complex missions ranging from missile exercises and NASA launches to underwater training evolutions.

For Chapman, the foundation for his Navy success was laid right here in Houston.

“My hometown taught me to keep my head down and get my work done,” he shared. “Houston instilled a work ethic and focus that’s helped me overcome challenges and stay committed to excellence.”

Driven by a desire to serve and inspired by a family legacy of military service, Chapman enlisted to be part of something greater than himself—and he’s already achieved remarkable milestones. Among his proudest achievements? Making Petty Officer Second Class on his first attempt—an accolade earned through sheer grit and determination.

“It was a huge milestone,” he reflected. “It showed me that hard work and perseverance truly pay off.”

But Chapman's motivations extend beyond his own ambitions. His greatest inspiration comes from being a father.

“I serve for my daughter,” he said with conviction. “Being able to provide for her future keeps me focused every day. The Navy gives me the opportunity to support my family while serving with purpose and pride.”

As the U.S. Navy celebrates 250 years of defending freedom and securing the seas, Chapman is a shining example of the service members who keep America's maritime strength afloat. With over 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and undersea cables carrying the world’s digital lifelines, Chapman’s role is more critical than ever.

He also credits his family—especially his mother—for his success.

“My mom has always been my biggest supporter. Her strength and encouragement have carried me through every challenge. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.”
