Houston’s Feline Lifeline: Traps to Laps Program Rescues Over 100 Kittens from the Streets and Shelters

In a city where compassion and community collaboration thrive, one woman is leading a transformative movement that’s quietly saving hundreds of lives—four paws at a time. Meet Chiquita Taylor, the visionary behind Traps to Laps (TTL), a groundbreaking, life-saving initiative reshaping the future of feline welfare across Greater Houston.

Launched in April 2024 under the umbrella of S.A.V.E. Rescue Coalition, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Traps to Laps has already changed the lives of more than 100 vulnerable kittens—rescuing them from the harsh streets and keeping them out of overcrowded animal shelters where survival is uncertain. With the help of passionate volunteers, foster families, veterinarians, and adoption partners, TTL is not just saving lives—it's rewriting Houston's cat rescue narrative.

From Feral to Family: The Power of Shelter Diversion

TTL functions as a Shelter Diversion Program, intentionally avoiding sending kittens and friendly adult cats to shelters altogether. Instead, the program works directly with community members—encouraging those who find stray litters to become part of the solution by fostering the animals themselves. When that's not possible, TTL taps into a network of experienced foster homes to step in.

“This program is not only reducing the feral cat population, it’s ensuring that these kittens never have to set foot inside a shelter,” said Taylor, who also serves as the Fix Ur Pet Community Outreach Director overseeing six animal welfare programs. “They’re safe, they’re cared for, and they’re being given the chance to live full, healthy lives.”

Every two weeks, TTL field technicians visit foster homes to provide vital veterinary services including health assessments, vaccinations, and treatments. Once the kittens are 12 weeks old and reach the appropriate weight, they are spayed or neutered—then “graduate” into trusted adoption programs with local rescue organizations, eventually landing in forever homes.

Collaboration is the Heartbeat of TTL

TTL’s success is built on strong partnerships. Organizations like S.A.V.E. Rescue, League City Pets Alive, Lifeline of Galveston County, Lone Star Pawz, Second Chance Pets, and Three Little Pitties Rescue are essential to placing these young rescues with responsible adopters.

“Traps to Laps would not exist without our adoption partners,” Taylor emphasized. “They are the bridge between rescue and forever.”

Make a Difference: Sponsor or Volunteer

The TTL program operates entirely on grants, community donations, and goodwill, and the need for support is ongoing. Medical care, sterilization surgeries, food, litter, and supplies are all funded through the generosity of Houstonians.

Local businesses and individuals are invited to sponsor a kitten or an entire litter, with the added joy of naming them and receiving photo updates and progress reports from intake to adoption.

Whether you're an animal lover, community activist, or business owner looking to make a local impact, Traps to Laps offers a unique opportunity to be part of Houston’s feline rescue story.
