In a case that underscores the gravity of violent crime and the pursuit of justice, a Houston man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the capital murder of 21-year-old Edward Guerrero. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced the verdict on Friday, emphasizing the tragedy and senselessness of the crime.
“Using a gun to steal from someone is armed robbery, and killing the victim during that robbery is capital murder,” Ogg stated. “This is gun violence at its absolute worst, and we work every day to get justice for the victims and their families in cases like this.”
A Crime That Shook the Community
The crime occurred on February 18, 2019, when Daniel Leyva, now 24, and his accomplices orchestrated a meeting with Guerrero under the pretense of purchasing marijuana. Their true intent, however, was robbery. Guerrero, attempting to defend himself, exchanged gunfire with Leyva. Tragically, Leyva’s shots struck Guerrero in the head, ending the young man’s life.
The case, prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Maroun Koutani and Dana Nazarova, highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Harris County DA’s Homicide Division and the Houston Police Department. “It was important that this defendant was held accountable for his actions by the community,” Koutani remarked. “We appreciate the time and effort of the jurors, who diligently deliberated to reach the appropriate verdict.”
A Sentence That Reflects the Severity of the Crime
Leyva’s conviction led to an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole. His accomplices, Juan Castillo and Joel Ruiz, previously pleaded guilty for their roles in the crime, receiving sentences of 35 years each.
“Thanks to the continued efforts of the Houston Police Department homicide investigators, we were able to obtain justice for the Guerrero family,” said Koutani.
Justice for Edward Guerrero
The sentencing brings a measure of closure to Guerrero’s grieving family, who have endured unimaginable loss. While no sentence can undo the harm caused, the community’s resolve to hold violent offenders accountable sends a strong message against gun violence.
This case serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating impact of crime on victims, families, and the broader community. It is also a testament to the commitment of Harris County law enforcement and legal teams to pursue justice, no matter how challenging the circumstances.
