Mayor Turner's Statement On Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen

Houston Native Participated in the Mayor's Hire Houston Youth Program

Mayor Sylvester Turner joins Vanessa Guillen's family, friends and the community in honoring the Houston native and Army Specialist.

Today, Mayor Turner visited a mural created in Vanessa's memory at Taqueria Del Sol in South Houston. He also laid flowers at the site of a growing memorial.

"On behalf of the City of Houston, I extend my prayers and support to the family of U.S. Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen. Vanessa was a bright and beautiful young woman. We are shocked and saddened by what happened to her.

"Vanessa participated in the City's Hire Houston Youth program, which provides young people with internships and job opportunities in the private sector, nonprofit organizations, and government. After graduating from Chavez High School, Vanessa enlisted in the army to protect and serve our nation. Vanessa's family said she wanted to be a hero, a fighter, and accomplish something great.

"On this Fourth of July, as we commemorate our country's freedom and founding ideals, we also honor Vanessa's service in the United States military. The City of Houston stands in solidarity with the Guillen family in their grief and in their search for justice."
