The Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) is delighted to present we’re ALL here!, an exhibition of the art of Aminah Robinson organized by ACA Galleries, New York, New York from September 21-November 2, 2019.

The late Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson was a lauded artist and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, who kept history alive through her work. Her home was a studio and sometimes a medium—she made art from scraps of material that she found or that people brought to her, from doors, walls, porch components, and even floors. Her kitchen floor was a complex mosaic of materials that included the baby teeth of her son.

Robinson used those materials to create beautifully crafted sculptures, woodcuts, drawings, books, and a variety of mixed media paintings that told the stories of her African-American ancestors and community, as well as those of the people and cultures she encountered on her extensive travels. She brought her neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio to the world and in turn brought that world back to her neighborhood. “I was interested in showing the work because of the conversation Aminah’s work presents for communities,” according to HMAAC CEO John Guess, Jr.

Her works are both freestanding monuments and fractional components of an ongoing odyssey. Robinson is a master of assemblage; her elegant collages are Homeric in content, quantity, and scale. This trademark body of work resonates deeply with communities. “Wherever we have shown Aminah’s work, the content has deeply engaged audiences,” added ACA Galleries co-owner Dorian Bergen..

As she honored others through her work, she laid the foundation for a conversation on race that was multicultural. HMAAC is pleased to share that conversation and Robinson’s affirmation that we’re ALL here!
