Legendary Ballerina celebrates a Decade of Sobriety

HOUSTON, TX - Legendary Ballerina Lauren Anderson takes a moment to celebrate a decade of being sober from alcohol and drugs. The disease hit Lauren in the 90's, during the peak of her career as the first African-American Principal Ballerina of the Houston Ballet. Under the pressure of being the best, Anderson attempted to cope through alcohol and drugs. The pressure would only increase after retirement in 2006 while trying to figure out the next chapter in her life.

This year, Anderson opened up about being a recovering alcoholic and creating a campaign called, 'You Are Not Alone', using her social platforms to connect with over 10,000 followers. The goal - to not only help others who may have fallen in a dark place and driven to alcohol as a coping mechanism, but also to connect with people who knew others in trouble. Anderson says the eye opener was being arrested in 2009 and landing in the courtroom of City of Houston Judge Regan who told her "I never want to see you in my court room again, this is not the place for you". It was this event that forced Anderson's decision to make a change.

"As I reflect on the past 10 years sober, I am grateful for all that has happened because it has gotten me to where I am right now......at peace," Lauren Anderson said. Today Anderson serves as the Program Manager in the Education & Community Engagement Department. In that capacity, she teaches ballet classes at Houston Ballet's academy and conducts master classes at schools in the Houston area. She is also in demand as a lecturer on the subject of ballet across the world. TODAY, Anderson is in Los Angeles teaching a series at Debbie Allen Dance Academy. Anderson also loves being a mom to her musician son, Lawrence, and traveling the world. No matter where Anderson is, she makes it a point to attend 12-steps meetings daily. Understanding it takes a village to get her through her rough days, Anderson serves on The Council on Recovery board, helping others find their hope.

July 15th is a day of celebration and hope for Anderson, it not only marks a new year of sobriety for the legend, but it is a reminder of what she has overcome.
