Latinos hold few of the doctoral degrees in the U.S. and thanks to a new program at the University of Texas at San Antonio that is changing. According to tpr.org, a new study finds a San Antonio program designed to inspire Latino students to pursue doctoral degrees and to work in cancer research is having measurable success. Amelie Ramirez is the director of Éxito! Latino Cancer Research Leadership Training program and says the mission is to encourage Latinos who are going into cancer research and to go into any fields in a doctoral program. Ramirez said about 170 people have completed the institute, and over 40 of those are enrolled in doctoral programs. The Journal of Cancer Education reports that 43 percent of Éxito program alumni applied to a doctoral program.
