Fiestas Patrias Parade Celebrated 50 Years of Hispanic Culture, Heritage, and Pride

Houstonians of Hispanic heritage were full of joy and pride at the 50th annual Fiestas Patrias Parade. Started by Judge Armando V. Rodriguez, the parade has grown from a small gathering to grand celebration highlighting the contributions of Hispanic Houstonians. Consul General of Mexico Oscar Rodriguez Cabrera performed the traditional “El Grito” ceremony on the streets of Houston for the very first time. This year the parade took on a theme to honor those in law enforcement with Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, Harris County Constable Sylvia Treviño and Constable Chris Diaz serving as grand marshals. Other special guests from Mexico included Francisco Arriaga and Liduvina Magarin. A host of JROTC units from various high schools added to the flair of the day’s festivities.
