Continuing the Work: Rep. Thierry Brings Maternal Mortality Film to Houston

(Houston) On Tuesday evening, February 20, 2018, State Rep. Shawn Thierry will host and moderate a discussion on the documentary screening of “Death By Delivery”, in partnership with Legacy Community Health, and Texas Southern University to address the maternal mortality crisis in Texas and nationwide. Texas currently leads the nation in the number of women who die as a result of childbirth related complications, a number that has doubled from 2010 to 2012. Beyond this, African American women are dying at three times the rate of all other women in Texas.

In the film, “Death By Delivery,” award-winning journalist Nelafar Hedayat travels on an awakening journey across the country to examine why African American women are dying in childbirth at four times the rate of all other women in the United States. This eye-opening film documents the systematic failures of maternal health-care on a national level.
