Earthquake Shakes Mexico, Killing Dozens

A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck central Mexico on the anniversary of the 1985 earthquake that killed thousands. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake hit five miles southeast of Atencingo in the state of Puebla. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto took to Twitter to urge residents to avoid the streets and shut off gas lines before going back to their homes. In a report issued by Gov. Graco Ramirez, he confirmed at least 42 people were killed in Morelos state. The death toll is expected to rise. President Donald Trump took to Twitter to extend his condolences. "God bless the people of Mexico City. We are with you and will be there for you," the former businessman wrote. The natural disaster comes two weeks after 30 people were killed in the country's southern coast, after being struck by a magnitude-8.1 earthquake.
