AFT on the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 47th Annual Legislative Conference

WASHINGTON—Statement of American Federation of Teachers Secretary-Treasurer Lorretta Johnson on the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 47th Annual Legislative Conference:

“Today, there is far too much division in our politics, inequality in our economics and bigotry in our society. While some have preyed on this division, the Congressional Black Caucus has been a partner in trying to close the gap. These 49 members of Congress continue to stand up and provide a hand up for so many forgotten Americans. That’s why the AFT is proud to partner with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

“This is no time to lower our defenses or sit on the sidelines. We must be engaged, empowered and prepared to fight forward for high-quality public education; affordable, high-quality healthcare; good jobs that pay living wages; a stronger democracy free of voter suppression; and an end to bigotry and hatred. The CBCF Annual Legislative Conference gives us an opportunity to accomplish just that.

“From town hall discussions about teacher diversity to legislative action to preserve the Every Student Succeeds Act, the AFT has a long and unique relationship with the CBCF and the CBC. Together, we have fought back against cuts to public education, we have fought forward to preserve the Affordable Care Act, and we will continue to fight to stomp out racial injustice, pass a revised Voting Rights Act that ends voter suppression efforts, and ensure that every worker has the right to join a union without intimidation.”
