Spanish billionaire Amancio Ortega edged out Bill Gates last to take the top spot as the world’s wealthiest person with an estimated worth of $85 billion. But by day’s end after the U.S. markets closed Gates was back on top. This was the third time that Ortega has taken the number one spot from Gates in his 18 years of being the world’s wealthiest man. His first surpassed Gates in October 2015 for less than 24 hours when he had a net worth of $80 billion. His second stint at #1 in September 2016 lasted a little longer.
