NFL Players and Nonprofit Organizations Tackle Hunger at Super Bowl LI

Houston, Texas, February 2, 2017 – Bread for the World, Feeding America, and the Houston Food Bank join National Football League players Jeff Allen (Houston Texans), Kelvin Beachum (Jacksonville Jaguars), and D’Qwell Jackson (Indianapolis Colts), for a pre-Super Bowl volunteer event from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Houston Food Bank.

The players will be among the 700 volunteers preparing and packaging meals for low-income families in the Houston area.

Beachum, a Texas native, has been working tirelessly in communities such as Dallas, Pittsburgh, and Jacksonville to bring awareness to the issues of hunger and malnutrition. During the last two years, he has partnered with Bread for the World, Feeding America, and World Vision to help pass legislation in Congress that would improve school lunch and breakfast programs, and also to educate policy makers about the effects of malnutrition in developing countries.

“As athletes, we understand that to prepare our minds and bodies for success, we must have access to nutritious meals,” Beachum said. “This event is a great opportunity to use the national stage of the Super Bowl to raise awareness about hunger and poverty in our country.”

Also invited to attend are students from the Stafford High School football team and U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston.
