Houston is known around the world as a sports city.

From football and baseball to basketball and soccer, Houston fans have plenty of hometown teams to cheer for. But here is something that some Houstonians may still not know:

Houston has a professional volleyball team.

And that team just added another accomplished international player to its roster.

LOVB Houston announced today that it has signed Hanna Hellvig, a nine-time member of the Swedish National Team, as an outside hitter for the upcoming 2026-27 season.

The signing adds another experienced international athlete to a LOVB Houston team that is coming off a successful 2025-26 campaign, including winning the regular-season championship.

Hellvig arrives in Houston with championship experience from some of Europe's top volleyball competitions.

In 2021, she helped Hylte/Halmstad win both the Swedish Championship and Swedish Grand Prix. That same year, she was recognized as the Swedish Player of the Year.

Her success continued internationally with a Swiss Championship in 2024. In 2025, Hellvig was named Best Outside Hitter of the French Cup, further establishing herself as one of Sweden's leading volleyball talents.

Most recently, Hellvig won the 2026 Polish Championship with UNI Opole before signing with Houston.

The addition of Hellvig continues the growth of a roster that already features Olympians, national team athletes and players with professional experience from around the world.

LOVB Houston unveiled its initial 2026-27 roster earlier this summer following its regular-season championship campaign. The team is led by Head Coach Sanja Tomašević, who was named the 2026 LOVB Coach of the Year.

The roster includes returning Founding Athletes and Olympians Jordan Thompson, Micha Hancock and Justine Wong-Orantes, along with other standout players representing the United States and several countries around the world.

For Houston sports fans who have not yet experienced professional volleyball, the upcoming season offers an opportunity to discover another hometown team competing at the highest level of the sport.

Professional women's sports continue to grow in visibility and popularity, and LOVB Houston is giving local fans a chance to watch elite volleyball players, including Olympians and international champions, compete under the Houston banner.
