For the Sake of Art Gala

Wearing their finest garments, it was party to dress to impress at the 5th annual For the Sake of Art 2018 Gala. The biennial wearable art competition that celebrates the talent of emerging artists and designers originally conceived as a fundraiser to support the restoration of the Texas Southern University’s 128 murals. The competition has grown to feature works from art alumni from the 1950’s through the 21st century. Power couple Tamia and Grant Hill served as Honorary Chairs for this year's gala. Honorees for the 2018 gala are internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Radcliffe Bailey and artist and curator David C. Driskell, a pioneering scholar in the field of African-American art. Judges for the 2018 competition are Cesar Galindo, Gayla Gardner, Korto Momolu, Selven O'Keefe Jarmon, and Valerie Cassel Oliver. Andrea Bonner, fashion and merchandising specialist at Houston Community College, is competition coordinator. Some in attendance were John Guess, Melanie Lawson, Melinda Spaulding, and Winell Herron.
