Christian Menefee Earns Workers Defense Action Fund Endorsement Ahead of TX-18 Runoff Amid Immigration Concerns

Workers Defense Action Fund, a Texas-based organization that mobilizes Latine voters and advocates for immigrant worker rights, has endorsed former Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee in the special election runoff for Texas’s 18th Congressional District.

The endorsement highlights Menefee’s work as Harris County Attorney, where he advanced policies aimed at expanding legal protections, access to services, and representation for immigrant residents. His tenure included participation in federal litigation opposing efforts to end birthright citizenship, resistance to policies limiting multilingual government services, and legal action challenging the suspension of refugee healthcare funding.

Menefee also led the creation of Harris County’s immigrant legal services fund, which provides legal representation for residents facing deportation proceedings. In addition, he defended Houston-based immigrant rights organizations from legal challenges, supported expanded identification options allowing undocumented residents to access county services, and helped establish the Essential Workers Board to ensure immigrant workers had formal input into county workplace policy.

The endorsement comes as immigration enforcement remains a significant issue nationwide. Increased ICE activity, expanded detention capacity, and broader enforcement authority have contributed to heightened concern among immigrant communities, advocacy groups, and local governments. Reports across multiple states have documented fear among families, reduced participation in public services, and economic disruptions tied to enforcement actions.

Menefee’s congressional campaign positions immigration as a central policy issue, emphasizing federal oversight of enforcement agencies, protections against wrongful deportations, and comprehensive immigration reform. His supporters point to his county-level record as evidence of his approach to immigration policy during a period of increased national scrutiny of ICE practices.

The special election runoff for Texas’s 18th Congressional District will be held Saturday, January 31. Early voting ends Thursday, January 29, at 7 p.m.
