Menefee Gains Houston Black American Democrats Endorsement

Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee has received the endorsement of the Houston Black American Democrats (H-BAD) in his campaign for Congress. The endorsement follows unanimous support from the Harris County Tejano Democrats, adding to a growing coalition of Democratic organizations and leaders backing Menefee.

Menefee made history as the first Black person and the youngest individual elected as Harris County Attorney. He began his political involvement through H-BAD, a grassroots organization focused on increasing voter participation and civic engagement in Black and underserved communities. The group provides programming in service, advocacy, leadership development, and voter education aimed at building an informed electorate.

The Menefee campaign has secured endorsements across Houston’s Democratic landscape, including the Houston LGBTQ+ Political Caucus, Black Women of Greater Houston PAC, and over a dozen local labor unions. Local political clubs, such as the Greater Heights Democratic Club and Oak Forest Area Democrats, as well as national organizations like the College Democrats of America and the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC, have also offered their support.

In addition, more than 35 current and former elected officials at the local, state, and federal level have endorsed Menefee. Former Congresswoman Erica Lee Carter, daughter of the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, is serving as Menefee’s campaign chair, reflecting the campaign’s ties to established political leadership.

Recent polling in Houston suggests the Democratic primary for Menefee’s targeted congressional seat is competitive, with surveys showing him consistently polling within the top tier of candidates. Polls conducted in August and September indicate strong name recognition among Black and Latino voters, constituencies that constitute a significant portion of the district’s electorate. Analysts note that endorsements from groups like H-BAD and the Tejano Democrats could play a pivotal role in turnout among these communities.

The campaign emphasizes Menefee’s commitment to addressing conservative policy initiatives at the federal level while advocating for equitable investment in Houston communities. With the primary election approaching, his growing coalition highlights broad-based support within the city’s Democratic constituency.
