The Ensemble Theatre is bringing rhythm, history, and heart to the holiday season with Take the Soul Train to Christmas!, a lively new musical production written by Ekundayo Bandele and directed and choreographed by Aisha Ussery, with musical direction by Melvin Johnson. Known for its spectacular holiday productions filled with soul and celebration, The Ensemble Theatre continues its tradition of presenting unforgettable performances that blend cultural storytelling with festive cheer.
This year’s show takes audiences on a whimsical journey through time, showcasing how African Americans have celebrated Christmas across generations. Told through the eyes of three students—Nat, Ida, and Rosa—who are assigned a research project just before winter break, the story unfolds as their Granddad summons the magical Soul Train to transport them through history. Along the way, they experience the joy, resilience, and creativity that have shaped Black holiday traditions through the ages.
The production features the sounds of African drumming, Harlem Renaissance jazz, the beats of the Civil Rights Movement, disco, and hip-hop, woven together with classic holiday tunes. It is a celebration of movement, music, and storytelling that highlights the enduring power of community and culture.
The cast includes Raimi Alford, Kyra J. Bob, Imani Giles, Kevin Davis Jr., Hindolo Bongay, Ryhan Brown, Brytanni Davis, Jarius Jones, Melody King, Fortune Onwunali, and Brianna Wyatt.
Take the Soul Train to Christmas! opens Friday, November 14, 2025, and runs through Sunday, December 21, 2025, at The Ensemble Theatre. Members of the press are invited to attend the media night on opening night, November 14.
Founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins, The Ensemble Theatre remains the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest.
