Abbie Kamin Leads Effort to Expand Recycling in Houston Apartments and Condos

The City of Houston has officially launched its Multi-Family Recycling (MFR) Pilot Program, a major step toward ensuring all residents have access to recycling services. The program aims to reduce waste, divert materials from landfills, and save taxpayer dollars over the long term.

Council Member Abbie Kamin, in partnership with Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD), is spearheading the effort to expand recycling options for residents in multi-family housing. More than half of Houston’s population now lives in apartments or condos, yet many of these properties have lacked convenient recycling options.

The program stems from a 2021 budget amendment authored by Kamin and has now reached a major milestone with its official rollout. Funding comes through The Recycling Partnership, with grant support from the Alliance to End Plastic Waste. Six multi-family properties are participating in the initial launch, with opportunities for additional complexes to join at no cost.

The program was specifically developed with input from SWMD, The Recycling Partnership, and the Alliance to End Plastic Waste to address the unique needs of Houston. Data collected during the year-long pilot will inform a future multi-family recycling ordinance, aligning Houston with other major U.S. cities.

Properties interested in joining the pilot program can contact the District C office at DistrictC@Houstontx.gov for more information.
