Houston’s Own Seaman Carlos Figueroa Sets Sail with Pride Aboard USS Benfold in the Philippine Sea

Houston, TX — In the vast blue expanse of the Philippine Sea, a hometown hero stands tall aboard one of the U.S. Navy’s most advanced warships. Seaman Carlos Figueroa, a proud Houston native, is making waves far from Texas as he serves aboard the USS Benfold (DDG 65), an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer currently deployed in the Indo-Pacific region.

On May 7, 2025, Seaman Figueroa was photographed in action on the fo’c’sle—the forward part of the ship—as he released the brake on the anchor chain during a critical special sea and anchor detail while the Benfold departed from Yokosuka, Japan. This operation marked another key moment in the ship’s ongoing forward deployment mission.

Assigned to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15—the Navy’s largest and most strategically positioned destroyer squadron—Figueroa plays a vital role within the U.S. 7th Fleet, the Navy’s principal surface force operating in the Indo-Pacific. With increasing maritime tensions in the region, sailors like Figueroa are on the front lines of peacekeeping, diplomacy, and national security.

The USS Benfold is a powerful symbol of American naval strength, equipped with cutting-edge missile systems, advanced radar, and a seasoned crew that ensures readiness 24/7. As a forward-deployed vessel, it represents a crucial part of the United States’ commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation and fostering international partnerships in the region.

Figueroa’s journey from the heart of Houston to the high seas is a testament to the strength and spirit of service found in the Bayou City. His dedication, precision, and courage reflect the values of his community, inspiring future generations of Houstonians to dream big—whether on land or at sea.

Houston Style Magazine salutes Seaman Carlos Figueroa and all service members stationed overseas for their unwavering commitment to protecting our nation and upholding peace across the globe.
