Texas Southern University (TSU) is rallying students, alumni, and community supporters to unite in Austin on Tuesday, March 4, for TSU Day at the Capitol. The event will focus on advocating for the University’s legislative priorities and highlighting its significant contribution to Texas’ economy, workforce, and future.
“Texas Southern University has played a vital role in educating and preparing the future leaders of Texas since its inception nearly 100 years ago,” said Dr. James White, Vice President for Governmental Relations and Civic Engagement. “We are asking our supporters to stand with us in Austin as we advocate for the resources necessary to continue our mission of academic excellence and student success.”
A key priority for TSU during this legislative session is securing Institutional Enhancement Appropriations. These crucial funds are designed to strengthen the University's foundation by supporting student success initiatives, workforce-driven academic programming, and modernized facilities that improve operational efficiency.
Why Now?
TSU’s advocacy is focused on three main areas:
- Student Success: Investment in holistic services and programs aimed at improving persistence, progression, and graduation rates, particularly for first-generation students.
- Academic Programming for Workforce Demands: TSU graduates contribute to industries such as healthcare, education, aviation, and law, and the University is seeking funding to continue meeting these workforce needs.
- 21st Century Facilities & Operational Efficiency: Ensuring the University’s infrastructure can support a dynamic and thriving student experience.
“The 2025 legislative session will be pivotal for Texas education,” said Brandon L. Simmons, Chairman of the TSU Board of Regents. “Texas Southern is seeking increased funding to invest in student success. This funding will continue to enhance academic programming that leads to credentials of value demanded by the thriving Texas economy. Investing in student success and career outcomes is how we Build a Strong Texas Southern.”
TSU encourages all advocates to participate in TSU Day at the Capitol on March 4. For those unable to attend, the University offers alternative ways to support its Legislative Appropriations Request through the TSU website.
Students will depart from campus by bus on March 4, 2025, at 6:00 a.m.
