No Kings, No Crowns — Just Democracy: Houston Joins National Uprising Against Authoritarianism”

Houston has always been a city that stands for freedom, equity, and the right to raise our collective voices. On Saturday, June 14, that spirit will ignite the streets once again as thousands of Houstonians join over 1,800 cities across the nation for the historic “No Kings” Day of Action—a bold and unified stand against the return of Trump-era authoritarianism, unchecked militarization, and a billionaire-first agenda that threatens the very soul of our democracy.

From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Houston City Hall (901 Bagby Street), community leaders, educators, human rights advocates, and everyday citizens will come together to echo one clear and unwavering message: we don’t serve kings—we serve the people.

A Parade of Arrogance, Funded by Us

The No Kings protest is a direct response to President Donald Trump's tone-deaf decision to celebrate his birthday with a $100 million taxpayer-funded military parade—a lavish spectacle of power that reads more like a monarch’s coronation than a democratic celebration. At a time when Americans are being told there's no money for public schools, Medicaid, SNAP, or Social Security, this extravagant display of ego is not only galling—it’s dangerous.

“While teachers are underpaid, children go hungry, and seniors worry about losing health care, Trump throws himself a birthday bash with our money,” says Jackie Anderson, President of the Houston Federation of Teachers. “That’s not patriotism—that’s tyranny with confetti.”

Houston’s Powerhouse Lineup

The city’s protest will be one of the most prominent in the country, featuring a coalition of powerhouse voices:

Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29)

Lauren Ashley Simmons (TX House, District 146)

Senator Molly Cook (TX Senate, District 15)

Bishop James Dixon, President of Houston NAACP

Fedrick Ingram, Secretary-Treasurer of AFT

Michelle Williams, President of the Houston Education Association

Britni Cuignton, Common Defense TX

Joe Mendoza, Human Rights Coalition Houston

These leaders will call out not just the spectacle of authoritarianism—but the systematic erosion of rights, protections, and dignity for working-class Americans under this regressive administration.

Community in Action: Food, Not Fear

In a powerful show of values over vanity, No Kings will also feature a community essentials and food drive. Organizers urge participants to bring donations of:

Canned food and shelf-stable groceries

Hygiene products (toothpaste, menstrual supplies)

Socks and basic clothing items

These items will go directly to Food Not Bombs, the Houston Food Bank, local food pantries, and Meals on Wheels—because while the Trump administration cuts lifelines, Houston steps up with love, not parades.

Not Just Protest—A Promise

The No Kings mobilization is rooted in nonviolent action and shared safety. Organizers have been trained in de-escalation, with a focus on peaceful resistance and powerful presence.

“This isn’t just a protest,” says Britni Cuignton, one of the lead organizers. “It’s a promise that we will never bow to fear, never forget our neighbors, and never allow democracy to be paraded away behind tanks and fireworks.”

Why Houston Matters

Houston is more than just a city on the map—it’s the heart of resistance, the capital of compassion, and a beacon of what’s possible when communities unite. When Houstonians rise, the nation listens.

So whether you bring your sign, your voice, or a can of beans—just be there.

Because on June 14, we don’t just say no to kings.
We say yes to justice, equity, and the real power of the people.
