KHOU 11 & HCC Team Up for a Historic Juneteenth Documentary Screening: Kinfolk and Family Invites Us All to Discover Our Roots

HOUSTON, TX – In a stirring tribute to freedom, family, and the unbreakable threads of heritage, KHOU 11 and Houston Community College (HCC) are inviting Houstonians to a powerful community event: a special Juneteenth screening of the documentary Juneteenth: 1865 – 2005 | Kinfolk and Family.

Set for Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. at the San Jacinto Auditorium (HCC Central Campus, 1300 Holman Street), this educational and emotional journey is the fifth chapter in KHOU’s award-winning Juneteenth series, produced by the dynamic storytelling duo—KHOU 11 News Anchors Mia Gradney and Len Cannon.

Why This Matters

In the era of DNA kits and digital ancestry searches, Kinfolk and Family serves as a cultural guide, emphasizing the importance of understanding our heritage, recognizing our affiliations, and reclaiming our narratives.  From the cradle of African village life to the tumultuous legacy of slavery, through emancipation and the modern age, this documentary traces the tenacity of African American families and their fight for unity across generations.

“We wanted to create something that not only commemorates Juneteenth but challenges all of us to explore and honor our own family stories,” shared Gradney. “There’s so much wisdom in the roots.”

Cannon adds, “This project connects the dots—from pain to perseverance. It’s not just about the past. It’s about how knowing our past empowers our present and future.”

What to Expect

Following the 60-minute film, attendees will have the rare opportunity to participate in an intimate Q&A session with the filmmakers themselves, Mia Gradney and Len Cannon—two of Houston’s most trusted voices.

Expect engaging conversation, reflections on identity, and insight into the creative process behind documenting Black legacy in a meaningful and inclusive way.
