Texas Southern University Student Joins Prestigious Deep-Sea Expedition Aboard E/V Nautilus

Swazi Gurnell Selected for Prestigious Deep-Sea Internship Aboard E/V *Nautilus* Exploring the Mariana Trench

Texas Southern University student Swazi Gurnell has been selected as a 2025 Video Systems Engineering Intern for the prestigious Ocean Exploration Trust’s Science & Engineering Internship Program. As part of this highly competitive initiative, Gurnell will join the crew of the renowned Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus for a groundbreaking expedition focused on deep-sea exploration in the Western Pacific.

Chosen from a nationwide pool of applicants, Gurnell is one of just 14 interns selected to participate in this immersive program. The upcoming expedition will involve the exploration of mud volcanoes and the water column above the Mariana Trench, including areas within the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument. Using remotely operated and autonomous vehicle technologies, the mission will investigate the region’s deep-sea biology and geology.

Operated by the nonprofit Ocean Exploration Trust, founded by famed oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard, the Nautilus expedition combines scientific research with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education and public outreach. The program is designed to push the boundaries of technological innovation while increasing awareness of the deep ocean’s mysteries. Expeditions are streamed live to global audiences through NautilusLive.org, allowing real-time access to deep-sea discoveries and direct engagement with the onboard team.

In the role of Video Systems Engineering Intern, Gurnell will receive hands-on training in operating camera systems for underwater robotic technologies. This opportunity provides invaluable real-world experience in a collaborative environment alongside experienced engineers and mentors. Interns in this program typically come from diverse academic backgrounds, including oceanography, atmospheric sciences, seafloor mapping, engineering disciplines, and media production.

The public can follow Gurnell’s journey and the team’s discoveries through live broadcasts and interactive Q&A sessions available daily at NautilusLive.org. Schools, summer programs, and community organizations are encouraged to schedule free virtual sessions with the crew, promoting ocean literacy and inspiring future explorers.

This milestone highlights the continued impact of Texas Southern University students in global scientific endeavors and reflects the growing presence of underrepresented communities in cutting-edge STEAM fields.
