Last month, Harris County Precinct 4 launched a summer heat relief effort by distributing 250 portable air conditioning units to residents as part of the "Cool 4 the Summer" initiative. Led by Commissioner Lesley Briones and supported by Precinct4Forward along with several donors, the program focused on providing assistance to qualifying seniors, low-income households, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
The initiative was developed in response to ongoing extreme heat conditions in the region. According to Harris County Public Health, more than 7,600 heat-related illnesses were reported in the county between 2019 and 2023. The program aimed to reduce the risk of heat-related health issues among populations identified as particularly vulnerable.
Distribution took place at multiple community centers across Precinct 4, where residents received the portable units following a qualification process. The program was funded through $46,000 in combined contributions from Precinct4Forward, The Daspit Law Firm, AshBritt, and an anonymous donor. Precinct crews and volunteers assisted with logistics, including loading units and providing water.
Commissioner Briones described the program as an effort to provide immediate relief during periods of high heat. Organizers indicated plans to continue the initiative in future years, depending on available resources and community needs.
The “Cool 4 the Summer” initiative is one of several seasonal programs implemented across Harris County to address heat-related challenges during the summer months.
