Dr. Thelma Scott founded S.A.F.E, Diversity Communities, formerly known as Barbara Jordan Endeavors Corporation (BJEC), in December 2000. Honorary founding board members include the late Barbara Jordan sister, Rose Mary McGowen. Dr. Scott, along with her family and a dedicated team of community service professionals, has steadfastly worked to address the needs of underrepresented groups in Houston. With a focus on promoting diversity and inclusion, the organization strives to create an environment where all individuals—regardless of their background, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status—have the resources, opportunities, and support to thrive. S.A.F.E. stands for Special, Abilities, Family, and Empowered.

The organization has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the community by offering services and initiatives designed to uplift and strengthen Houston’s diverse population.
One of the core initiatives of S.A.F.E. Diversity Communities is its scholarship program, which has helped countless students pursue higher education and achieve their dreams. Each year, the organization awards scholarships to deserving students who exhibit academic excellence, leadership potential, and a strong commitment to community service. These scholarships not only provide financial relief but also inspire students to continue their educational journey, knowing that their hard work and contributions to the community are valued.
The scholarship program is a testament to the organization's belief in the transformative power of education. By investing in the next generation of leaders, S.A.F.E. Diversity Communities is helping to create a pipeline of talented, passionate individuals who are equipped to make a difference in the world.
Beyond its direct support for students, S.A.F.E. Diversity Communities plays a vital role in assisting other non-profit organizations across Houston. The organization partners with a wide array of local groups that share similar goals of improving the quality of life for underserved communities. Through strategic collaborations, resource sharing, and advocacy, S.A.F.E. Diversity Communities helps amplify the impact of these organizations.
This collaborative approach fosters a unified effort to address the most pressing needs of Houston’s residents. Whether it's supporting homeless shelters, providing food for families in need, or helping individuals access health and wellness services, S.A.F.E. Diversity Communities works hand-in-hand with its partners to create lasting change and build a stronger, more resilient community. As S.A.F.E. Diversity Communities celebrates its 25th anniversary, it looks ahead to a future filled with even greater impact and expansion.
