Prairie View A&M Claims 2021-22 SWAC Commissioner’s Cup Award

The Prairie View A&M University Athletics Department continued its dominance against the rest of the Southwestern Athletic Conference by winning the 2021-22 James Frank Commissioner’s Cup.

It is the second consecutive year that PVAMU has won the award. The Panthers also secured the Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award for the top female program and the C.D. Henry Award, awarded to the men.

“I think that this honor is a milestone that we can all be very proud of,” Dr. Donald R. Reed, the Director of Athletics, said to the Panthers’ sports information department. “It’s an honor that we swept all three trophies. The Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award, is special to us as it is named after one of our PV Legends (Track & Field Coach Barbara Jacket). We are excited for our student athletes, our athletic department and the University, as we are the first institution to earn all three of these awards under the new 12- member team league. So, we are definitely excited about that.”

Program finishes determine the all-sports awards in league-sponsored sports. Each team finish is awarded a point value, and the member institutions with the highest point totals after the athletic season concluded are subsequently awarded the Commissioners Cup.

Prairie View A&M secured eight SWAC championships this past athletic year (167 points), claiming league titles in the sports of Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, Softball, Bowling (regular season), and Soccer (regular season/tournament)

The Panthers won the C.D. Henry Award after accumulating 70 points on the men’s side. This marked the third consecutive year PVAMU claimed the male all-sports award.

Jackson State (65 points) and Alabama State (62 points) finished in second a third-place overall on the men’s side.

Prairie View A&M claimed the Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award after finishing with 97 points in the women’s final standings. Alabama State (95 points) and Jackson State (85 points) finished second and third, respectively.
