Astros Jose Altuve Listed As Day-To-Day And Will Miss Remainder Of The Series

Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker informed the media Tuesday that second baseman Jose Altuve will be shut down for the remaining two games against the Los Angeles Angels. Altuve suffered a hamstring strain to his left leg in the bottom of the eighth inning of the Astros 8-3 home opener victory Monday night running to first base.

“I stopped in to see him and he is doing the exercises I am surprised to see him doing,” Baker said in his pregame press conference from the Astros dugout. “He was smiling, and our trainer is going to see how he is doing strength wise and agility. I am quite pleasingly surprised. He is a physical, mental, spiritual, and medical marvel.”

Rookie shortstop Jose Peña will replace Altuve at the top of the batting order, while utility player Aldemys Díaz will play second base. Baker and the Astros medical staff will continue to monitor Altuve daily, but he was adamant that the former A.L. MVP would not see the field for the rest of the Angels series.

“A few days, at least,” Baker said when asked how much rest he would give Altuve. “We just want to make sure he’s ok and doesn’t pull anything. So that’s why we haven’t placed him on the IL because it might not be the full term.”
