The Southwestern Athletic Conference passed out weekly honors for outstanding performances on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball as well as special teams and newcomer of the week.
Alabama A&M quarterback Aqeel Glass, Jackson State’s was named Offensive Player of the Week after leading his team to a 42-41 victory over South Carolina State. The former SWAC Offensive Player of the Year passed for 426 yards and four touchdowns and added another score with one rushing touchdown.
Jackson State linebacker Aubrey Miller captured Defensive Player of the Week honors as he helped stifle the offense of SWAC newcomer Florida A&M. The senior from Memphis had a game high nine tackles as the Tigers defeated the Rattlers by a score of 7-6 in the Orange Bottom Classic in Florida.
Grambling State had kicker/punter Garrett Urban to thank in spoiling the head coaching debut of former NFL running back Eddie George at Tennessee State. Urban averaged 41 yards on six punts and added a 24-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter to seal the 16-10 victory. That earned him Special Teams Player of the Week.
Prairie View may have found something special in transfer quarterback Jawon Pass. The former Louisville Cardinals player earned SWAC Newcomer of the Week after he made his debut against Texas Southern in the Labor Day Classic and did not disappoint with an impressive 354 passing yards and three passing touchdowns in a 40-17 victory.
