A long-standing tradition after every Friday night home game at Minute Maid Park is the fireworks. Fans will sit in their seats as the sky lights up for a certain amount of time as the smoke fills the air and the sky lights up.
The Houston Astros gave the home crowd at Target Field a brief display of that on Sunday as they used a 20-hit attack to defeat the Minnesota Twins by a score of 14-3.
Houston now heads back home after going 6-3 and winning all three series against Toronto, Boston, and Minnesota on their longest road trip of the season.
“When you leave on a 10-day road trip, you don’t know what to expect,” said Astros manager Dusty Baker. “You hope you do well and come home at least .500. We won every series, which was really big. You have to be happy with it and go home now for a much-needed day off and start the grind on that 20 in a row and hopefully we can carry this over on Tuesday against Texas.”
The Astros also hope to carry over some of that firepower that was generated on the road trip as they scored double digits in runs twice and averaged over seven runs per game. That is due in large part to the hot bat of Michael Brantley who has gone 12-for-20 at the plate in his last five games.
On Sunday he was every bit of his nickname, “The Professional Hitter” as he had four hits (his second four-hit game of the series) in which three of them were doubles to go along with four RBI.
“Michael Brantley might hit the ball anywhere,” said Baker about Brantley who leads the team with a .337 batting average. “He can hit. He works on it and he knows he can hit. If you were going to teach a kid how to hit, you would tell them to watch Michael Brantley.”
Brantley’s bat wasn’t the only one on fire Sunday as Kyle Tucker hit his second homerun in as many days to go along with monster center field blasts from Yordan Alvarez and Chas McCormick as the Astros scored a run from the fourth inning on and never trailed in the game.
“I have a good feeling about this team,” said Carlos Correa who also added three hits on the day. “Everybody’s on the same page. The vibe in the clubhouse reminds me of ’17 and ’19. Man, I really love this team.”
