Teen Drug Overdose Death Rate Climbed 19% In One Year

The rate of teen drug overdose deaths in the United States climbed 19% from 2014 to 2015, from 3.1 deaths per 100,000 teens to 3.7 per 100,000, according to data released this week. The new numbers involve teens ages 15 to 19 and were released by the National Center for Health Statistics.

Houston Equity Fund offering $8 million in grant funding for minority-owned small businesses

The online application portal for “Open for Business” grants worth up to $100,000 will be open from May 15-31.

Minority-owned small businesses and nonprofits in the Houston area can apply for up to $100,000 in grant funding later this month. A total of $8 million is available this year during the second phase of the "Open for Business" grant program, which is funded by Wells Fargo and administered by the Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity. An online application portal for grant money is scheduled to be open from 5 a.m. May 15 through 11:59 p.m. May 31, with eligible businesses and nonprofits competing to receive awards ranging from $5,000-$100,000 apiece.

Texas Southern University Is Now Home to NAACP Official Archives

Texas Southern University has been designated as the official depository of records from the Texas NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). A special presentation was held August 17 in the University’s Robert J. Terry Library. The collection consists of minutes, newspaper clippings, legal documents, brochures, Freedom Banquet programs and photographs, along with digitized images from individual Texas NAACP branches.

Fourth- and Fifth-Grade Students Portray Dr. King and Honor Muhammed Ali at Event

On Friday, Jan. 6, fourth- and fifth-grade students representing 24 Houston ISD elementary schools will compete at Thompson Elementary to earn one of 12 finalist positions during the semifinal round of the 21st Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition. Students will present original speeches, not to exceed five minutes, addressing the topic: “If Dr. King were alive today, what would he say about Muhammad Ali’s contribution to society?”
