Well Deserved: Why Hopkins And Not OBJ Should Be the Highest Paid WR
On September 1, 2017, the Houston Texans made their star WR DeAndre Hopkins the highest paid player at his position (5 yrs./$81 million - $49 million guaranteed). That exceeds the contract extension WR Antonio Brown received ($68 million/$19 million guaranteed) this offseason from the Pittsburg Steelers. Hopkins has now set the bar for others at his position to seek similar deals.

The “Brodie” era has officially begun in Houston. Russell Westbrook was introduced on Friday after being traded to Houston from the Oklahoma City Thunder for Chris Paul and two first-round picks in 2024 and 2026 with the rights to two first-round swaps in 2021 and 2025. The 2016-17 MVP was introduced by Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey who could hardly contain his excitement knowing that he had brokered a deal that could potentially bring the city of Houston another NBA championship.

NBA Super Teams: The Beginning and The End
As I prepare myself to watch game three of the 2017 NBA Finals featuring the two best teams in the league, it got me to thinking about the NBA as a whole and why there are only two “Super Teams.” Which by the way get used to seeing the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors for at least the next 3 years (I will explain that shortly). Astros win Game 4 to push them closer to a return to the World Series
The Astros are on the brink of going back to their second World Series within the last three years. Houston (3-1) got a much needed and some might think unexpected victory on last night by beating the New York Yankees (1-3) in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) by a score of 8-3. Houston will now send their ace, Justin Verlander to the mound in Game 5 to try and close out the series, while the Yankees will start James Paxton to stave off elimination.

The great debate on who is the G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time) when it comes to the NBA players usually comes down to two of the best to have ever set foot on the hardwood. Retired Hall of Fame shooting guard for the Chicago Bulls Michael Jordan or future first ballot Hall of Fame forward LeBron James who currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Sports fans go back and forth with different stats, attributes, and characteristics on who is the best and depending on the day, the top spot changes consistently.

As I stepped on the illustrious campus of Prairie View A&M University in the fall of 1997, I will never forget that sense of pride and family atmosphere I felt run through my body. It was like the spirits of the “Unknown 8” (The first known class of the Alta Vista Agriculture & Mechanical College for Colored Youth who enrolled and began their studies March 11, 1878) was walking with me. Until you have been on the first state supported college in Texas for African Americans and the second oldest public institution of higher education in the state, you won’t know the jubilation of screaming out, “Who Ya Rooting For” at all sporting events.

I remember it like it was yesterday. June 25, 2009, I was standing in the checkout line at the Shopette in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. In my basket were candy, chips, and other products I had been tasked to get for the rest of the soldiers that were in basic training with me. Was I supposed to be there? No. But we can talk about that at a later date. As I stood in line trying not to be seen by the drill sergeants, my eyes happened to catch a glance at what was being shown on the television. Pop Icon and music legend, Michael Jackson, had passed away due to health complications.

An old cliché that has been used for centuries is, “Taking someone to the woodshed.” It’s an expression referred to the former practice of taking a naughty or disobedient child to the woodshed to be punished. On Thursday night the Toyota Center turned into the proverbial “Woodshed” as Houston (3-1) defeated San Antonio (0-3) by a score of 128-106 behind a brilliant performance by center Christian Wood.
