Riceville Memorial Ceremony

A new memorial was unveiled at the historic Riceville Cemetery on Juneteenth, honoring the legacy of one of the Houston area's oldest African American communities. The ceremony highlighted the importance of preserving local history and recognizing the contributions of generations of Riceville residents. The memorial was made possible through the leadership of Council Member Edward Pollard and Chief of Staff Paul Young, with artwork created by Houston artist Mathieu Jn Baptiste. Descendants of the Rice family were also present to commemorate the community's enduring legacy at Riceville Cemetery and Riceville Mount Olive Baptist Church.
