R&B star John Legend performed two shows at a packed Baltimore record store Tuesday evening to celebrate the release of his new album, "Muse."
The performances took place at The Sound Garden in the Fells Point neighborhood. About 600 fans who preordered the $38 album were eligible to attend the shows.
The Sound Garden said fans could also purchase the album in advance and select free in-store pickup to collect it on the day of the event.
"I am a huge John Legend fan," said fan Courtney Russell. "I saw him 11 years ago, but he has been my favorite artist for a very, very long time. I feel like he's gotten me through a lot of different eras in my life, especially relationships."
Legend, a 13-time Grammy Award winner, announced the release of "Muse" on social media Friday, writing, "Muse is out now," in a Facebook post.
The album was produced by his longtime friend Pharrell Williams. Legend described the project as "unlike anything either of us has made before. I'm so excited for you to hear all of it."
The Sound Garden's owner, Bryan Burkert, told The Baltimore Banner that preorders alone were likely to fill the venue.
"He sells out Merriweather [Post Pavilion]," Burkert said. "Do not expect entry without purchase."
Legend performed songs from "Muse" on a grand piano on the store's outdoor stage in the parking lot.
"It's an honor, and we're super excited to have an artist of his caliber to do such a small, intimate show in our lot," Burkert said.
Legend last performed in the Baltimore area in late 2024, when his Christmas tour stopped at Live! Casino & Hotel in Hanover. He also headlined Pier Six Pavilion at Baltimore's Inner Harbor in August 2014.
"I think it means a lot to me because Baltimore is just a hub of potential," said fan Amaru Barber. "So when big names come and realize that, and respect Baltimore, it means a lot."
