Before Music for New Bodies was destined for headphones, playlists, and record collections around the world, it had a distinctly Houston heartbeat. Now, the ambitious composition that made its world premiere at Rice University is preparing for another milestone: its first commercial recording, arriving Friday, October 30, 2026, on DACAMERA Editions.
Created by composer and conductor Matthew Aucoin in collaboration with acclaimed theater and opera director Peter Sellars, this 70-minute fusion of vocal symphony and music theater does not settle for easy questions. It asks what it means to be human at a moment when artificial intelligence is accelerating, the planet is under pressure, and technology promises to transform the very meaning of life.
And no, this is not your grandfather’s classical music. Unless, of course, Grandpa enjoyed bold experimentation and a little existential reflection with his orchestra.
The work draws from poems by Pulitzer Prize-winning Jorie Graham, whose vivid language connects intimate human experiences with planetary forces. Voices emerge from imagined ocean depths, shifting identities, and the uneasy territory between human consciousness and machine intelligence. Five soloists, a richly layered instrumental ensemble, and electronics create a sound world that can feel both otherworldly and urgently familiar.
Houston helped set that journey in motion. On April 20, 2024, DACAMERA and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music presented the world premiere at Brockman Hall for Opera. The project was co-commissioned by DACAMERA, Rice’s Shepherd School, the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*), LA Opera, and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Shepherd School musicians and DACAMERA Young Artists joined the original soloists under Aucoin’s baton, demonstrating the kind of artistic collaboration that makes Houston a national cultural destination.
The momentum did not stop at Main Street. Subsequent performances carried the work to other major stages, including Lincoln Center in 2025, where San Francisco Classical Voice praised its “fearless performances.” What began as a Houston premiere is now reaching listeners far beyond the concert hall.
The new album features AMOC and Grammy-nominated Sandbox Percussion*, with vocal performances by Kathryn Lewek, Meryl Dominguez, Megan Moore, Paul Appleby, and Evan Hughes. Recorded in New York in July 2025, the release also bears a significant Houston connection behind the scenes: DACAMERA artistic director Sarah Rothenberg serves as executive producer.
For Houston audiences, the project is more than a noteworthy album launch. It is proof that transformative cultural work can be cultivated locally and shared globally. DACAMERA’s commitment to adventurous programming, together with Rice’s investment in emerging artists, helped give this challenging, timely score its first public voice.
Preorders are available through DACAMERA Editions’ Bandcamp store, where listeners can preview the music and choose between digital and compact disc editions.
As the recording approaches release, Houston Style Magazine celebrates the artists and institutions willing to ask uncomfortable questions through extraordinary music. In a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, Music for New Bodies offers a thoroughly human proposition: before we reinvent ourselves, perhaps we should listen—to one another, to the Earth, and to the music.
