Houston residents will have an opportunity to hear the stories of Ukrainian children whose lives have been transformed by war during a special screening of Ash and Crayons on Saturday, November 7, at River Oaks Theatre. The event will feature an in-person appearance by director Evgeny Afineevsky, followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.

The documentary follows seven Ukrainian children whose lives were upended by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Through live-action footage and animation created by Ukrainian artists, the film documents the children's experiences with war, displacement, abduction and captivity while highlighting their resilience and determination to pursue their dreams.

Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky, the film presents the experiences of young Ukrainians who continue to pursue their goals as athletes, performers and public servants despite the challenges they have faced. Afineevsky previously directed Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom, an Academy Award-nominated documentary about Ukraine.

The film's seven young protagonists include survivors of attacks, children who experienced captivity or abduction, and those displaced by the war. Their stories provide a personal perspective on the conflict and its impact on a generation of Ukrainian children.

Attendees will have the opportunity to watch the documentary and participate in a discussion with Afineevsky about the film.

Admission is free, but advance registration is required. The screening will take place at River Oaks Theatre, 2009 W. Gray St., Houston. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., and the film begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
