Harris Health Approves New Comprehensive Cancer Center to Expand Access to Advanced Cancer Care

In a city internationally celebrated for medical innovation, Harris Health is making another historic move to ensure world-class cancer treatment isn't determined by a patient's ZIP code, income or transportation options.

On October 14, the Harris Health Board of Trustees approved moving forward with a new $150 million comprehensive cancer center, marking a major milestone in Northeast Houston's healthcare transformation.

The proposed four-story, 125,000-square-foot facility will rise on the John M. O'Quinn Hospital campus near North Loop and Lockwood, bringing specialized cancer services closer to communities historically challenged by healthcare disparities.

For residents of Fifth Ward, Settegast, Kashmere Gardens and surrounding neighborhoods, this announcement represents something especially meaningful: greater access to treatment, dignity and hope.

A Historic Investment in Healthcare Equity

For six decades, Harris Health has served as a healthcare lifeline for Harris County residents, particularly uninsured, underinsured and medically underserved populations.

That mission took a significant leap forward when Harris County voters approved a $2.5 billion healthcare bond in November 2023, helping launch an ambitious hospital modernization initiative.

Construction of the new John M. O'Quinn Hospital began in 2024, and the campus reached its 50% completion milestone in April 2026. The hospital is expected to welcome patients in early 2029, with the cancer center following later that year.

The expansion arrives at a critical moment.

Harris Health reports cancer cases have increased 10.6% over four years, while outpatient oncology demand is projected to grow approximately 20% over the next decade.

Bringing Advanced Cancer Care Under One Roof

The proposed facility will offer patients a more coordinated experience, reducing the need to travel between multiple locations for treatment and diagnostic services.

Planned features include:

Two new linear accelerators for precision radiation therapy

A brachytherapy suite and CT simulator

An infusion center accommodating up to 50 patients

Advanced PET/CT imaging and nuclear medicine

Two floors of specialized outpatient clinics

Patient navigation, support services and convenient covered parking

For families balancing employment, caregiving and complicated treatment schedules, these improvements could make an extraordinary difference.

"Every patient deserves access to advanced cancer care close to home," said Dr. Esmaeil Porsa, Harris Health president and CEO, emphasizing the organization's commitment to coordinated, high-quality treatment.

Philanthropy Meets Purpose

Following a successful $100 million fundraising campaign, the Harris Health Strategic Fund plans to pursue an additional $80 million in philanthropic support for the cancer center.

The investment demonstrates how public healthcare leadership, community partnerships and private generosity can collectively reshape Houston's healthcare landscape.

Harris Health Senior Vice President Amineh Kostov underscored the importance of bringing specialists and services together so patients can concentrate on recovery rather than navigating logistical obstacles.

A Healthier Future for Northeast Houston

For Houston Style Magazine, which has long championed neighborhood revitalization, healthcare equity and community investment, this announcement represents another encouraging chapter in Harris County's development.

The cancer center remains in the planning stage, but its promise is powerful.

Because when innovation meets accessibility, healthcare becomes more than treatment.

It becomes opportunity. It becomes equity. And, most importantly, it becomes hope.
