What happens when culture, community leadership and civic engagement come together for one powerful conversation? Houston residents will have an opportunity to explore that question when Fight for Democracy presents Real Conversations Part III: The Power of Showing Up on Thursday, October 22, at The Astorian in Houston.
With early voting underway across Texas and Election Day approaching on November 3, the evening will bring together influential voices from entertainment, politics, media and community advocacy to discuss the issues shaping Texas and the importance of civic participation. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The program will feature a fireside chat with platinum-selling artist, producer and activist David Banner, followed by a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Ashley Etienne, former communications director to Vice President Kamala Harris and former communications director to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Joining the conversation will be actor and organizer Kendrick Sampson, Louisiana advocate Gary Chambers Jr., SpoiledLatina founder Yvonne Guidry, political media strategist Colin Rogero, and Michaela Booker, founder and executive director of Black Girls Politickin.
The evening will conclude with an extended audience question-and-answer session, giving attendees an opportunity to engage directly with the speakers, raise questions and participate in a broader discussion about the future of their communities.
For Fight for Democracy founder Trey Daniels, the purpose of the series is rooted in ensuring that community members have a meaningful place in conversations about the decisions that affect their lives.
The organization’s guiding principle is that the communities closest to the problems should be closest to the power to solve them. Real Conversations brings that vision to life by creating space for Houston residents and leaders to exchange perspectives, discuss pressing concerns and recognize the role they can play in shaping the future.
Previous editions of Real Conversations have featured the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Houston rap icon Bun B and other prominent voices in the city’s political and cultural circles. The series also complements Fight for Democracy’s POWER TALK Houston programming, which brings community leaders, residents and special guests together to address critical issues facing Texans.
Now, Houston is invited to join the conversation.
As voters head to the polls during the early voting period, Real Conversations Part III offers an opportunity to become more informed, hear different perspectives and connect civic participation with the issues affecting everyday life.
Whether the focus is community priorities, political engagement or the power of collective voices, the message is clear: showing up matters, and meaningful conversations begin when people are willing to take part.
