Houston Public Library Receives $449K Grant for Technology Upgrades

The Houston Public Library has received more than $449,000 in grant funding from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission to support broadband and technology infrastructure improvements at 10 library locations across Houston.

The funding was awarded through the state’s Library Infrastructure Facility Improvement grant program and will help modernize internet connectivity, data room systems, and public technology access at several of Houston’s older library facilities.

Planned improvements include broadband cabling upgrades, HVAC installations for data rooms, and refreshed public computer stations. Construction and upgrade work is scheduled to begin June 4, 2026, with completion expected by Dec. 31, 2026.

To safely complete the upgrades, several library branches will temporarily close for periods ranging from one to three weeks. Houston Public Library officials stated that locations will reopen as quickly as possible and that updated schedules will be shared as work progresses.

The first phase of temporary closures includes:

  • Moody Neighborhood Library: June 4 through June 17
  • Pleasantville Neighborhood Library: June 9 through June 18
  • Hillendahl Neighborhood Library: June 19 through July 10
  • Melcher Neighborhood Library: July 13 through July 21
  • Acres Homes Neighborhood Library: July 22 through Aug. 10

Additional improvements are also planned later in 2026 at Park Place, Johnson, Mancuso, Tuttle, and Walter Neighborhood Libraries.

Houston Public Library Director Sandy Gaw said the upgrades will improve internet reliability, public technology access, and infrastructure for library customers throughout the city. The project also highlights the importance of grant partnerships and external funding in helping libraries respond to evolving community needs.

The project is funded through the American Rescue Plan Act Capital Projects Fund administered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Statewide, approximately $6 million was awarded to 37 Texas libraries through the grant program.

The Houston Public Library system serves more than 2.3 million residents through 44 public service locations across the city. The system includes six regional libraries, neighborhood and express libraries, history research centers, TECHLink centers, outreach services, and adult literacy programs.

More information and closure updates are available through Houston Public Library and the library system’s social media channels.
